This exhibition will mainly cover agricultural practices and beliefs in Burkina Faso and Mali, which are within the savanna and forest areas of the Western Sudan region (South Saharan). Most of these lands can be difficult to cultivate, to control, so the farmers in these regions have to continuously strike a bargain with the spirits of the uncultivated terrain. This happens through unique festivals, ceremonies, and agricultural societies, which will be the topic of this exhibition.

The wilderness is significant in many African cosmologies because it is the inverse of culture – so by describing its characteristics, the ideal characteristics of African society can be defined. Many communities are organized into three realms, the spiritual, the physical, and the in-between. The physical realm is the controllable realm – it is orderly, governed by laws, and includes cultivated fields and domesticated animals. The wilderness is beyond human control so it is unpredictable, potentially dangerous, but there are powers to be harnessed as it can also be a source of medicine, sustenance, and wisdom. This exhibition will present a brief overview of the beliefs associated with the wilderness and the agricultural practices that follow, to show how these concepts translated into social experiences and visible form through selected artifacts from the Savannah African Art Museum.

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum—an acclaimed museum dedicated to celebrating and preserving America’s maritime legacy—is delighted to present “Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky,” an exciting new solo exhibition featuring nautical-inspired, mixed-media art by Rob Strati, from September 25, 2025 through April 12, 2026.

“Beyond the Plate” will showcase new work by one of America’s hottest contemporary artists. Strati has recently enjoyed sold-out exhibits at Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis and FREMIN Gallery in New York and has sold work to top international art collectors in New York, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and beyond. Strati’s art incorporates broken porcelain plates that have been embellished and adorned with creative details. The exhibition features the artist’s latest bold, kinetic mixed-media works and limited-edition prints as well as an ambitious site-specific installation that will be suspended from the ceiling of the Ships of the Sea atrium.

Strati’s latest series was inspired by a porcelain plate from his wife’s late mother, which accidentally fell and broke into fragments. In order to preserve the shards of the shattered plate, and the memory of someone vitally important to both him and his wife, the artist began working on his “Fragmented” series, using pen and paper to “explore the possibilities of things broken and the stories that can evolve from the pieces left behind.”

Each piece of Strati’s art starts with the breaking of a porcelain plate and takes approximately two weeks to complete. Although the artist is rigorous about his creative process, he always allows space for spontaneous ideas to emerge from the fragments. Over time, he has learned important lessons about art and life by creating new works of art from broken shards.

Strati describes his work as a “mix of chaos and control” that is constantly evolving. He hopes his upcoming exhibition at Ships of the Sea will inspire visitors to think about time, creativity and beauty in fresh, new ways. All of the art in “Beyond the Plate” will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.

ABOUT ROBERT STRATI: Originally from Boston, Strati grew up in Columbus, Ohio and earned a B.A. in History of Art from Ohio State University. His art has been exhibited at leading international museums and art galleries and has been featured in The Art Newspaper, Whitehot Magazine, Reclaim, Beaux Arts, Sculpture Magazine, Vice and The Village Voice. Strati’s work and “Beyond the Plate” will also be featured in ARTS Southeast’s fall issue of IMPACT Magazine in October 2025.

Experience the unique and flavorful fortified wine and hear how it intertwines with the history of Savannah, as a port city and a center of hospitality. Mid and late 19th century Savannahians, Ward McAllister* and William Neyle Habersham, will be linked to Madeira and Madeira parties.
*McAllister, who with Mrs. Astor, became the arbiters of NY society said, “In Savannah and Charleston, from 1800 up to the Civil War, afternoon wine [Madeira] parties were the custom.”
The program is a 75-minute experience that provides an overview of what Madeira wine is and its connection with Savannah.
Participants should be able to stand as well as walk up and down stairs.

Admission: $36.50 per person. The program is limited to 14 participants. We anticipate selling out.
Patrons must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

A drama about the city’s greatest trailblazer: First Black nurse in American history, first teacher of freed African-American children, author of the only Civil War Memoir written by a Black woman, and the first woman and first person of color to have a Savannah square named for her. Artists Betsy Cain, Matt Toole , Tony Artemisia, Will Penny, Dana Richardson, Chris Moss, Eric Wooddell, Maxx Feist, Rick Petrea, Mary Hartman and Isaac McCaslin will host visitors in their studios. We hope this public invitation will inspire you to get to know some artists in the community or, if you already know them, to take a peek at what they’ve been up to lately.

How to participate: This is a self-guided studio crawl. During the event you can find a map on our website or start at any artist’s studio you like and pick up a map there. Ology Gallery/Clayer & Co. will also have maps.

This event will feature arts vendors, performances by local talent, delicious food trucks and concessions vendors, fun workshops, and more. New this year: a collage workshop with artist Nancey Price, a Hip Hop dance workshop with choreographer Christian Cooper, and as a special event for kids – a children’s book reading with author Nina Rickenbacker Edwards, Ed.D. Plus, the first 100 attendees will receive a free Savannah Black Art Expo branded tote bag!

Free and open to the public. Arts workshops are free with day-of sign-up required. Visual arts vendors set their own prices and payment methods, and receive 100% of all proceeds. All ages welcome.

Historic Savannah Foundation and the Davenport House Museum proudly present the Artisan Spotlight Series at Historic Kennedy Pharmacy, located at 323 East Broughton St. in Savannah. The Artisan Spotlight Series offers immersive, creative workshops and provides a dynamic platform for artists and artisans to share their creative processes with local residents and visitors.

This February, give new life to old textiles! Learn how stitching can transform everyday items into personal works of art in a creative upcycling workshop led by local artist Shaye Galligan of Savannah-based studio The Markers Guild. Ideal for beginners and experienced embroidery artists, this workshop will offer guided instruction in simple embroidery techniques that can be used to refresh, repair or embellish clothing and accessories. All embroidery materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a favorite garment, tote bag or textile to work on with Shaye’s assistance.

Join David Chisolm and Tiara Luten as they share their ancestors’ journey to freedom, how they uncovered their stories, and how they are working to preserve the legacy of their ancestors that were enslaved here at Wormsloe. Mary Socci, Director of UGA’s Center for Research and Education, will join the discussion and highlight a few tools and techniques that can aid families trying to navigate the challenges of uncovering information into past enslaved family members.

Raffles, auctions, food, music & fun, all to help support & improve Tybee American Legion Post 154. 2026 is the 85 anniversary of Post 154, for 85 years the Legion has been a gathering place for the community to celebrate, grieve, dance, celebrate, learn, gather, fundraise & be supportive to our local community as well as connecting with other Legions when disasters strike or send gifts to active duty soldiers to build morale & show appreciation. April will bring us an Outlaw Gypsy concert, July is the 85 anniversary celebration & September The Parrot Heads are hosting a finale fundraiser.
