Experience Iconic Glenn Close Style & Storytelling with Holiday Screening of "101 Dalmatians" - Saturday, December 27

This holiday season continues at Telfair Museums with family-friendly events. “The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection” Film Series continues with a holiday matinee showing of “101 Dalmatians” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 27 at the Jepson Center. Admission is free for Telfair members, $10 for non-members and $5 for children 6 years old and up.

“101 Dalmatians” depicts Glenn Close as the deliciously evil Cruella de Vil, the owner of a fashion house who is obsessed with owning a Dalmatian-skin coat. She has her henchmen abduct a whole bunch of unlucky pups as part of her plan to make her dream coat a reality, but a couple who both own Dalmatian puppies set out to put a stop to Cruella’s diabolical plan.

Come for the adventure on screen and stay for the drama off-screen to explore Telfair Museums’ featured exhibition with costumes from this movie and more, “The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection.”

“We’re thrilled to invite locals and visitors to experience the magic of Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians’ on the big screen and then step into the world of costume design with ‘The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection’,” said Elyse Gerstenecker, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Decorative Arts. “It’s a unique opportunity to see how iconic characters are brought to life through artistry and imagination.”

Throughout her storied career, actress Glenn Close has collaborated closely with costume designers to help bring the characters she embodies to life. Inspired by the creativity and craftsmanship she saw in her film and theater productions, she began collecting and preserving costumes and accessories from her projects after her first movie,“The World According to Garp” (1982). In 2017, she donated her over 800-piece collection to the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection in the School of Art, Architecture + Design at Indiana University.

First presented at the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University in 2020, “The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection” offers visitors a unique opportunity to thoroughly explore the careful consideration and exacting details that teams of designers, drapers, and other craftspeople created in over 50 ensembles and numerous examples of jewelry, shoes, and other accessories. It features the work of award-winning costume designers, in addition to Anthony Powell (“101 Dalmatians” and “102 Dalmatians”), also Ann Roth (“The Stepford Wives”), and James Acheson (“Dangerous Liaisons”), and highlight the craftsmanship of costume making workshops such as Barbara Matera Ltd (“101 Dalmatians” and “102 Dalmatians”).

The exhibition is organized by Telfair Museums in partnership with the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection at the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design of Indiana University. Please visit www.Telfair.org for more information or to purchase tickets.
