​​Ships of the Sea will unveil Sea of Ink: Savannah Maritime Tattoos, an extraordinary exhibit showcasing the art and cultural significance of tattoos. Featuring more than a dozen Savannah-area tattoo artists and over 30 maritime tattoo collectors, Sea of Ink highlights tattoos as a meaningful art form and cultural movement.

With one-third of American adults having at least one tattoo, this visual language is rich for exploration. Sea of Ink presents the tattoo not just as body art, but as a powerful instrument for storytelling. Tattoos tell stories that often are deeply meaningful to the collector, and are a result of an artistic understanding between the tattoo creator and the collector.​​

Before televisions, computers, and high-speed internet, everyday Americans engaged with image-based storytelling through illustration. Illustration is art created to be reproduced for books, magazines, periodicals, advertisements, and other printed media. Designed covers—based on finished paintings—by artists like Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) regularly reached thousands of homes via mass-produced publications such as “The Saturday Evening Post.” Celebrating the charming, wholesome, and seemingly commonplace, Rockwell enjoyed a successful career, which unfolded against a string of era-defining crises and revolutions, including two World Wars, the Great Depression, struggles over Civil Rights, and space exploration. Through illustration, Rockwell and his peers chronicled the transformation and challenging of ideals in the 20th-century, sometimes using childhood to explore complex subject matter. By tapping into American adults’ nostalgia and their associations of childhood with innocence, these artists made subjects from consumer goods to wartime politics more appealing. Through advertisements and calendar illustrations, magazine covers, and story artwork, ‘Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood’ regards childhood as an expressive and revealing lens to view an evolving and often complex American society.

In two years, Parker’s House has served 469 unaccompanied homeless women. To assist in alleviating the challenge of homelessness, Oliver Maner, one of Savannah’s most distinguished law firms, is partnering with the community for the fourth consecutive year to support Parker’s House at Union Mission, the area’s only facility dedicated to providing emergency housing and support services for unaccompanied women who need shelter and assistance.

This donation drive takes place throughout National Homelessness Awareness Month in November. Oliver Maner challenges the Savannah legal community and the public at large to help spread awareness, increase donations, and collect essential items for the women at Parker’s House.

“It’s easy to take for granted the basic necessities that many of us have,” said Oliver Maner Associate, Amelia Stevens. “This donation drive is a tangible way to show our commitment to helping women in need and to empower them to rebuild their lives and regain their independence. We’re honored to partner with the Savannah community to support Parker’s House and make a real difference.”

Savannah-Chatham County has the second-highest rate of homelessness in Georgia. Parker’s House offers emergency housing with supportive services for up to 32 women at a time. Partnering with residents, the program fosters personal, economic, and housing stability through a 90-day program.

Join us for a Thanksgiving Break Basketball Clinic, hosted by the City of Port Wentworth from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on November 25, 26, and 27 at the P. B. Edwards Jr. Gym. The Davenport House Museum will put a festive holiday spin on daily guided tours, offering special Yuletide Tours from November 20, 2024 through January 4, 2025.

Yuletide Tours invite locals and visitors to experience the holiday traditions practiced in early 19th-century Savannah. These family-friendly tours will guide guests through the decked halls of the 204-year-old Federal-style home and offer insight into how the Davenport family celebrated the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays.

Yuletide Tours also include access to the Urban Enslaved Exhibit, an immersive experience that sheds light on the lives of the 13 enslaved individuals who lived and worked at the Davenport House. Guests will gain insight into how these individuals observed and were impacted by the holiday season.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students, $10 for children and free for children under 6 years of age as well as Historic Savannah Foundation members. Senior and military discounts are available at the door. The Davenport House is open Monday through Saturday and will be closed on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
