Drawn from Telfair Museums’ permanent collection, Primary: Artists Working in Red, Yellow, and Blue explores how artists have utilized primary colors in adventurous ways to elicit brilliant experiences. Featuring works by Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, and Joan Miró, these energetic and dynamic compositions introduce viewers to the expansive possibilities of a simple palette.

‘Tideland’ is an exhibition of black and white photographs by Savannah-based photographer Parker Stewart (b. 1992). Taken between 2020 and 2024, these evocative photographs document the coast of Georgia by transporting the viewer into the visceral and primordial atmosphere of the barrier islands and inland waterways.

The SCAD Museum of Art is proud to honor our U.S. service members by participating in the annual Blue Star Museums movement. In collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America, SCAD MOA welcomes active-duty military personnel and their families with complimentary admission starting on Armed Forces Day, May 17, through Labor Day, Sept. 1, 2025. The SCAD Museum of Art joins world-renowned cultural institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the de Young Museum, San Francisco; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Dallas Museum of Art as a Blue Star Museum participant.

(Un)Grounded, a solo exhibition of new work by Iranian-American artist Raheleh Filsoofi, is an immersive multimedia installation of ceramic vessels, sound, and video in conversation with the pottery and landscapes on view in The Moss Mystique: Southern Women and Newcomb Pottery. Over the past two years, Filsoofi has traveled to nine states in the Southeast to collect soil, including a visit to Savannah in April 2024. She has carefully archived, processed, and extracted the clay from these locations to form the physical and symbolic content of her multidisciplinary practice. Embracing her movement as a woman and immigrant within the region, (Un)Grounded considers the legacies of Newcomb Pottery through Filsoofi’s personal identity to engage with present-day perceptions surrounding southern identity, transience, and meanings of authenticity.

In 1895, administrators in the art department at the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College in New Orleans, Louisiana, a women’s higher education institution that was joined to Tulane University, started a new commercial enterprise so that their students could put the skills they learned in their art and design courses into practice. A group of potters, mostly men, created the various objects out of clays sourced throughout the South, and women graduates of the art program painted them with images of flora and fauna. Newcomb Pottery quickly received praise throughout the US for the quality of its designs and the perceived authenticity of its representation of Southern regional identity, and these strong ties to location remain present today, long after the Pottery’s closure in 1939.

This exhibition focuses on the Newcomb potters’ material and chosen subjects, their relationships to regional identity, and the Pottery’s changing approaches to these subjects over time. Tasked with representing the region through their work, Newcomb designers earned a reputation for turning to their local environment for inspiration. This exhibition explores how designs that featured repeating, semi-abstract, and carefully selected plants such as waterlilies eventually transformed into muted landscapes of moss-draped oaks and cypresses, and the way these images matched romanticized visions of the South that were growing in the 20th century. The Moss Mystique asks visitors to reconsider their ideas about what makes a place unique. In an adjacent gallery, interdisciplinary artist Raheleh Filsoofi’s new multimedia exhibition (Un)Grounded will respond to the complexities of Newcomb pottery.

Andrew Morris is a self-taught gardener who has created a life centered around teaching people to grow their own food and supplying them with the tools they need for success.

Andrew opened Savannah Hydroponics & Organics in January 2009 to fill the need for a local source of specialty gardening and hydroponic supplies here in the Lowcountry. Born and raised in southern California where he was exposed to gardening, recycling, and composting at an early age, he was taught the benefits of sustainable living. Leaving SoCal for the mountains of Lake Tahoe as a young adult, his love for growing plants truly emerged. With snow on the ground up to eight months of the year, he started using lighting and hydroponic systems to grow plants year round indoors. After leaving California, he lived in Hawaii for almost two years, where, between his jobs as a boat captain, he helped his friends with a gardening store in Maui. He found his way to the Lowcountry via Harbor Town Marina after a period of living and working on yachts.

Summer Art Camp at Scribble Art Studio includes all materials and daily snack. Instructors guide students each day in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and fiber arts. Each week is different for campers attending more than one week.

For week five of Super Sanctuary Summer, we will be diving deep into the world of plastics, and how they affect our ocean. Explore the hidden world of microscopic plastics in our water, listen to guest speakers working every day to clean up Savannah, and get an introduction to how plastic became a global issue.

FAQs:
First come, first served?? Will you have enough shirts for me??
We have plenty of shirts! And plenty of dye! We do, however, only have one tie-dye station. We will help everyone go through the process in the order in which they arrive—that’s what we mean by first come, first served.

What kind of designs can I do?
We like to call it a “camp-style” tie-dye. We are great at doing spirals, stripes, and crumbles. If you have something else in mind, you are free to do with your shirt as you’d like! But we don’t have TikTok-level skills.

What colors are there?
We have 10 colors for you to choose from! Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Green, Teal, Blue, Purple, and Navy.

What if the weather is bad? This seems like a good rainy day activity…
Our tie-dye station is set up under a tent in front of the shop. If there is inclement weather, we will reschedule. With that said, a little rain never hurt anyone—if there’s a chance of on-and-off showers, we’ll go ahead and hope for the best! We *will* pause when the rain is heavy. Now, if there is thunder, lightening, and/or strong winds, we will reschedule. We love our tent, but it’s just a tent after all! Keeping everyone safe is most important!! It can be hard to make the right call—please check our social media for updates if the weather is looking iffy.

How long will the experience take?
We have a 3-step process to take your shirt from plain to awesome—it should take you 15-20 minutes to do. With that said, we have one tie-dye station. If there is a group (or two!) in front of you, you will need to wait until we are ready to help you. If you have a large group, we will need to break you into 2 or 3 mini-groups, so it will take a little longer. We do ”overlap” the 3 steps, so that we can keep everyone moving at a good pace.

Why can’t I make a reservation?
This event is weather-dependent. That can make any Tuesday quite unpredictable! If it’s raining at 11, we may start at noon. Or we might need take a break at 2, due to an afternoon rainstorm. We like to plan ahead as much as the next person! But we all need to be a little flexible on Tie-Dye Tuesdays—get on Tybee Time, y’all!

What time do you stop?
We tie-dye from 11am to 6pm. With that said, since this activity takes 15-20 minutes, we start cleaning up around 5:45 if no one is here—after spending a long day under the tent, we’re ready to go home to our pets! We have no problem staying here until 6, or even a few minutes after, but we ask that you please plan accordingly! If you roll up at 5:55, we might already be cleaned up!
