Indigenous food has always been at the table even when it wasn’t recognized as such. Join us at Coastal Table and Tales for an evening with Chef Crystal Wahpepah, founder of Wahpepah’s Kitchen in Oakland, the first Indigenous woman to own a restaurant in Northern California, a James Beard Award finalist, and the first Indigenous chef to appear on Food Network’s Chopped.
Chef Wahpepah will prepare two dishes rooted in generations of Kickapoo foodways: Kickapoo Chili and Sweetblue Cornbread. Dishes that carry her heritage forward, on their own terms.
During the demonstration, Chef Wahpepah, will be in conversation with her co-author, Amy Paige Condon, about her cookbook, her heritage food, and what it means to reclaim recognition at the table. The evening will also open up discussion on:
The long, often unrecognized presence of Indigenous cuisine in American food culture
The role of land acknowledgment in modern cooking
How Native ingredients are finding their way back into everyday kitchens
Chef Wahpepah’s path from home cook to James Beard finalist and culinary ambassador
Come hungry, come curious, and leave with a signed copy of the book and a deeper appreciation for the food heritage that’s always belonged at the table.

Eastern Wharf’s free Fall Riverfront Concert Series, which is presented in conjunction with Savannah Stopover Music Festival, will kick off with Americana rock band Cordovas and Savannah opening act Little Gracie.
Based in Nashville, Cordovas have garnered acclaim as a popular Americana rock band with a lively sound that blends soulful harmonies, poetic craft and cosmic improvisation, earning comparisons to acts like The Band, the Grateful Dead and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Savannah’s own Little Gracie will open for Cordovas, combining influences from the 1970s to the 2000s. The concert will take place in The Park at Eastern Wharf, which is the largest public green space on the Savannah River, located at 101 Port St. in Savannah, Ga.
Food trucks on-site will include The Big Cheese, Latin Chicks, Mac Attack, Royal Tasty Avenue and Rita’s Italian Ice. To-go drinks will be available for purchase from a mobile bar.
Limited VIP tickets are currently available on Eventbrite for $50, which include prime riverfront concert viewing with first-come, first-served seating as well as complimentary snacks, beer and wine. ID and 21 wristbands are required for access to the VIP area.

Historic Savannah Foundation and the Davenport House Museum will present a special Mid-Autumn Festival Family Day in conjunction with the Savannah Chinese Association on Sun., Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free, family-friendly event will be filled with hands-on activities, cultural performances, refreshments and fun for all ages.
One of the most important holidays in many East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the harvest, family reunions and the full moon, serving as a time for gathering together to share food and give thanks. The celebration will also include the opening of the Savannah Chinese Association’s new photography exhibition, “Charming Savannah Seen Through Chinese Eyes” at 12:30 p.m.
The Mid-Autumn Festival Family Day also honors an important chapter in the Davenport House Museum’s own history. From 1901 to 1902, a portion of the home was occupied by the Chan family, one of Savannah’s earliest Chinese-American families. Through a special partnership with the Savannah Chinese Association, guests are invited to connect with the museum’s past while celebrating a living cultural tradition.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the return of the museum’s acclaimed exhibition, “Old Chan Magic: Chinese Roots, Southern Branches,” which shares the story of the Chan family and Savannah’s early Chinese community.
The Mid-Autumn Festival Family Day is free and open to the public thanks to generous support from the City of Savannah.

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will host its 21st Annual Buddy Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, in Forsyth Park. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m., followed by the one-mile walk at 10:30 a.m., with family-friendly activities continuing until 2 p.m.
The Buddy Walk, held each October during National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, celebrates the abilities and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome while raising critical funds for local programs. This year’s event will feature speakers, self-advocates, live music and cheering from SCAD athletic teams.
Proceeds support LDSS programs including Camp Buddy, a summer program in Effingham and Chatham counties designed to help students retain academic and social skills over summer break. Funds also underwrite family support meetings, new parent packets and educational opportunities for families and advocates across the region.
“This event is all about coming together as a community to support and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome,” said Candy Bogardus, LDSS president. “Every step we take at the Buddy Walk makes a real difference in the lives of families across our region. We encourage everyone to come out, participate and help us continue our mission.”
The first Savannah Buddy Walk was held in 2006, shortly after LDSS was founded, and attendance grew to more than 5,000 people annually before the pandemic. This year marks the 21st iteration of the event.
Community members can participate by joining a team, registering as an individual walker, creating a team, sponsoring the event or making a donation. Businesses and organizations serving people with different abilities are invited to reserve an information booth. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
For more information and to register, visit ldssga.org or contact Candy Bogardus at ldssgabuddywalk@gmail.com.

Vincent Dubois—titular organist at Notre-Dame, Paris—is joined by world-renowned accordionist Marie-Andrée Joerger. This “Parisian flair” program, performed by the husband-wife duo, blends the monumental scale of the organ with the expressive, nuanced virtuosity of the accordion. Additionally, Mr. Dubois will perform famous works from the standard organ repertoire and conclude the program with a large-scale improvisation on themes submitted by the audience. This concert will utilize a full size screen in the Altar area to see the duo as they perform from the Organ Loft.
