Event Details

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will host its 21st Annual Buddy Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, in Forsyth Park. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m., followed by the one-mile walk at 10:30 a.m., with family-friendly activities continuing until 2 p.m.

The Buddy Walk, held each October during National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, celebrates the abilities and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome while raising critical funds for local programs. This year’s event will feature speakers, self-advocates, live music and cheering from SCAD athletic teams.

Proceeds support LDSS programs including Camp Buddy, a summer program in Effingham and Chatham counties designed to help students retain academic and social skills over summer break. Funds also underwrite family support meetings, new parent packets and educational opportunities for families and advocates across the region.

“This event is all about coming together as a community to support and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome,” said Candy Bogardus, LDSS president. “Every step we take at the Buddy Walk makes a real difference in the lives of families across our region. We encourage everyone to come out, participate and help us continue our mission.”

The first Savannah Buddy Walk was held in 2006, shortly after LDSS was founded, and attendance grew to more than 5,000 people annually before the pandemic. This year marks the 21st iteration of the event.

Community members can participate by joining a team, registering as an individual walker, creating a team, sponsoring the event or making a donation. Businesses and organizations serving people with different abilities are invited to reserve an information booth. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
