Join us for an introduction to winnowing — the simple, time-honored way of cleaning and saving your own seed. We’ll demystify how to separate what you want (seed) from what you don’t (chaff) so you can carry favorite plants forward year after year., and you’ll take home a custom wildflower seed mix!
Why It Matters:
– Preserve and share beloved varieties
– Build climate-adapted seed that thrives in coastal Georgia
– Save money and reduce waste
– Keep our gardens resilient and biodiverse
What You’ll Learn:
– The history and meaning of winnowing
– How to recognize and remove chaff
– When and how to collect seed heads at peak ripeness
– How to identify viable, healthy seed
– Hands-on practice with flowers and grasses from our gardens and other local spaces — like yarrow, echinacea, coreopsis, skullcap, salvia, swamp sunflower, gaura, hibiscus, love grass, grama grass, river oats, cosmos, marigolds, beggar’s tick, spiderwort, and more.
What to bring:
– Optional: your dried seed heads from your garden to use in your mix or to share!
– Your favorite garden gloves
– Snips or pruners you like working with
– Any seed heads or pods you’ve been meaning to process and clean
Quick Safety & Success Notes:
– Some seed heads can be prickly (echinacea, beggar’s tick); bring gloves.
– Allergies? Consider a mask when shaking and sifting.
