SCAD Cinema Circle: There Will Be Blood

The great cinematic mythmaker of the San Fernando Valley, Paul Thomas Anderson, ventures into the western frontier in this operatic tale of ambition, greed, and obsession. Working with a loose framework of Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel “Oil!,” its foundation is the Oscar-winning bravura performance of Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oil prospector locked in a volatile rivalry with a devout young preacher, played by Paul Dano. From Robert Elswit’s hypnotic, Oscar-winning cinematography to Jonny Greenwood’s evocative, otherworldly score, Anderson crafts a sprawling epic of uncompromising vision and power—-a masterpiece widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 21st century.
