Event Details
oin the Evans Center for African American Studies for the ‘Revelations’ Celebration Community Workshop hosted by dance educators from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The workshop is an immersive adventure through the incomparable Alvin Ailey’s iconic masterpiece, Revelations. More than just a beloved dance, ‘Revelations’ has become a cultural treasure, an enduring classic paying homage to African American heritage and reflecting the “blood memories” of Ailey’s childhood in rural Texas and the Baptist Church.
Through movement that spans the full emotional spectrum, from profound sorrow to ecstatic joy, this timeless work captures the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. Dance educators will lead community members through choreography accompanied by a live percussionist and props from the show.
As Ailey himself said, “I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.” This workshop embodies that vision, welcoming participants of all ages and backgrounds to move, connect, and celebrate together. Bring your friends and family and discover why ‘Revelations’ continues to uplift hearts around the world.
This workshop will take place outside in the museum’s courtyard. Participants are encouraged to dress according to the weather and in comfortable, athletic clothes and shoes they can move in.
