This award-winning documentary, which was written, produced, directed, and edited by Kay Flowers Johnson and executive produced by Brynn Grant, chronicles the remarkable history of Dorchester Academy in Midway, Georgia – a National Historic Landmark and key site on the National Civil Rights Trail.
The Academy served as a pivotal training ground for leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement, including work by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under Andrew Young, and the extraordinary contributions of Septima Clark and Dorothy Cotton. Septima Clark, a Gullah Geechee woman from South Carolina, was the director of teacher training and an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Dorothy Cotton was the highest-ranking female in the SCLC’s inner circle.
