Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) will host a special discussion on “Nominating the Kiah House for the National Register of Historic Places” on Thursday, May 16 at the Historic Savannah Foundation’s headquarters as part of the 2024 Historic Savannah Foundation Lecture Series, “People, Places and Stories That Define Savannah.” Attendees are invited to a wine reception at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will start at 6 p.m.

This event will feature Sarah Ward and Becki Harkness of Ward Architecture Preservation discussing the process of nominating a historic structure to the National Register of Historic Places and sharing the challenges they overcame during the process of researching and preparing the nomination. With guidance from HSF, Sarah and Becki have worked diligently to add the Kiah House to the National Register of Historic Places, which will ensure the preservation, protection and recognition of this important piece of Savannah’s history.

Virginia Jackson Kiah was an artist, educator and Civil Rights activist who made a lasting impact in Savannah when, after facing barriers to museum entry during segregation, she and husband Dr. Calvin Kiah opened their own home as a museum in 1959, creating a space for Black artists. After sitting vacant for years following Virginia Kiah’s death in 2001, the Kiah House Museum was acquired by Historic Savannah Foundation as a HSF Revolving Fund property and is currently being restored by its new owners, the Galvan Foundation, in partnership with the City of Savannah and the African Diaspora Museology Institute. The goal is to re-open the Kiah House as a museum and community space following the renovation.

Established in 2010, Ward Architecture Preservation is an award-winning, full-service architecture firm specializing in the preservation planning and historic rehabilitation of residential and commercial properties throughout the Southeast. Sarah has over 19 years of experience in historic preservation of cultural resources throughout the region, working with nonprofits, government agencies, private firms and as a consultant. Becki has worked in the Savannah historic preservation and non-profit community for 15 years and joined Ward Architecture Preservation in 2017 to assist the firm with documenting historic structures, historic rehabilitation tax incentives and historic resources survey work.

Historic Savannah Foundation’s 2024 Lecture Series is open to the public. Reservations are recommended, as space is limited. Attendance is free for Historic Savannah Foundation members and $15 for non-members. Get excited and join us for Savannah’s most diverse networking event series, Sips at the Station, as we spotlight a rotation of nonprofits each month. Hosted by Ardsley Station, Savannah Master Calendar, and Simply Savannah Marketing, admission is a $10 donation and includes a complimentary beverage from Ardsley Station’s special bar menu and an assortment of unique, off-menu, hors d’oeuvres, all while enjoying live music. Raffle tickets are also available for purchase, and 100% of proceeds from admission and raffle sales go to the month’s chosen nonprofit.

Gilliard & Company works to transform the lives of young adults transitioning out of foster care through the implementation of services and programs these young adults desperately need so they are able to thrive; offering trauma intervention and support, stability and safety through transitional housing, and mentors to supply the essential resources and guidance to help navigate the complexities of adulthood.

Heroes for Hallie Grace Inc. presents the 3rd Annual Hallie Grace Memorial Butterfly Ball for EB, taking place at Savannah Station [601 Cohen St] on June 7, 2024 from 6-10PM, featuring delicious dinner and dessert, live music, DJ/dancing the night away, a fun photo booth, a live butterfly release, a silent auction and more!

The event takes place around what would have been Hallie Grace Davis’s 3rd birthday and every dollar raised goes towards fighting the condition that took her life, Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Adult tickets start at just $65 for General Admission; $100 for VIP [includes 2 free drinks, a reserved seat during the event, and a VIP Swag Bag]. You can also purchase a butterfly to release in memory of Hallie Grace Davis or anyone in your own life that you would like to honor, whether or not you are able to attend. Heroes for Hallie Grace Inc. was created in loving memory of forever 3-month-old Hallie Grace Davis, who was born with the rarest and most terminal type of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Epidermolysis Bullosa is a single mutation genetic condition that stops the body from producing a needed protein to hold the skin together, so it blisters and tears with any friction. It is known as “the worst disease you’ve never heard of” and there is currently no treatment or cure. Our mission is to ultimately change that! The nonprofit specifically focuses on raising awareness, funding important research, and improving quality of life for individuals and their families impacted by EB, and 100% of the money raised during this event goes directly to that cause.
