The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) will host its 17th Annual Night of Champions & Hiring Expo on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront Hotel.
The annual event celebrates businesses that provide meaningful employment opportunities to differently-abled adults, including individuals with Down syndrome, while highlighting the importance of inclusive workplaces.
Tickets, tables, and sponsorships are now available for purchase. LDSS offers sponsorships at all levels, and all tickets and sponsorships can be secured online at
https://ldssga.org/night-of-champions/
Despite progress nationwide, people with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to employment. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 22.7 percent of people with disabilities were employed in 2024, compared with more than 60 percent of people without disabilities.
Night of Champions highlights employers helping close that gap by creating environments where individuals of all abilities can contribute, succeed and grow. The evening will also feature a Hiring Expo designed to connect businesses with job seekers and demonstrate the value of inclusive hiring.
“Night of Champions allows employers to see the real impact of inclusion,” said Joe Marchese, event chair. “When businesses invest in people with different abilities, the results benefit everyone — stronger teams, higher retention and a more connected community.”
The evening will include a cocktail hour and Hiring Expo, followed by dinner and a recognition ceremony honoring businesses that champion inclusive employment. Attendees will hear success stories and learn how inclusive hiring strengthens organizations and expands opportunity.
Proceeds from Night of Champions support LDSS programs throughout the year, including Camp Buddy for children with Down syndrome, the annual Buddy Walk in Forsyth Park, and regular support meetings for families and friends.

With a heart full of gratitude, Kristy Crill, Friends, and Family invite you to join us as we celebrate five incredible years of The Dive Savannah—an organization born out of a simple desire to love and serve Savannah through hospitality and now has grown into one of the most trusted partners to first responders and the medical community in Chatham County to end homelessness for societies most vulnerable patients.
Since our founding, The Dive Savannah has helped more than 500 individuals enter inpatient rehabilitation and to receive critical mental health, physical, and addiction recovery services. We have also reunited over 1,000 families across the country and four international families —restoring hope, dignity, and connection where it was once lost.
What makes this work even more meaningful is how it’s sustained. The Dive Savannah is not government funded. Instead, we earn the majority of our support through our weeknight meals for busy families and our catering services—allowing every act of service to be earned through excellence and directly fueled by community participation.
Along the way, we have been honored with numerous awards and have broken several records—yet our greatest achievement will always be the life we live here in Savannah and lives changed and the people brought home.

This exhibition will mainly cover agricultural practices and beliefs in Burkina Faso and Mali, which are within the savanna and forest areas of the Western Sudan region (South Saharan). Most of these lands can be difficult to cultivate, to control, so the farmers in these regions have to continuously strike a bargain with the spirits of the uncultivated terrain. This happens through unique festivals, ceremonies, and agricultural societies, which will be the topic of this exhibition.
The wilderness is significant in many African cosmologies because it is the inverse of culture – so by describing its characteristics, the ideal characteristics of African society can be defined. Many communities are organized into three realms, the spiritual, the physical, and the in-between. The physical realm is the controllable realm – it is orderly, governed by laws, and includes cultivated fields and domesticated animals. The wilderness is beyond human control so it is unpredictable, potentially dangerous, but there are powers to be harnessed as it can also be a source of medicine, sustenance, and wisdom. This exhibition will present a brief overview of the beliefs associated with the wilderness and the agricultural practices that follow, to show how these concepts translated into social experiences and visible form through selected artifacts from the Savannah African Art Museum.

A popular sign of spring in coastal Georgia is underway as the annual Rivers of Iris bloom returns to the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm. Featuring hundreds of vibrant irises flowing through the landscape, the display is one of the largest public displays of iris in the world and is expected to continue through early May, with peak color arriving in mid to late April.
The Rivers of Iris includes not only more than 220 Louisiana iris cultivars but also features an array of tall bearded iris, spuria iris, Japanese iris, and multiple iris species, many of which are part of important preservation and research efforts.
Visitors can experience a constantly changing palette of color throughout the bloom season while learning about the Gardens’ ongoing research into which iris varieties perform best in the Lowcountry’s unique climate. The collection also supports education, sustainability, and public inspiration for incorporating iris into residential and public landscapes.
In addition to its visual appeal, the collection serves as a living laboratory. More than 700 tall bearded iris, 150 spuria iris, and 275 Louisiana iris cultivars have been tested over the years to identify the strongest performers for the coastal Georgia environment.
Guests are encouraged to visit multiple times to experience the evolving display, as the different iris cultivars bloom well into May, and to take advantage of photography opportunities, educational experiences, and a memorable spring outing.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant! We are so happy you want to dedicate your time and energy to the Georgia coast.
Volunteering with Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is a great opportunity to build and connect with your community, learn new skills, gain experience in marine science or education or mentorship of others. Whether early in your career and looking for experience, just moved to the area and wanting to become involved or enjoying a much-deserved retirement, volunteering with Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant has something for you. Your skills and experience, in turn, will lend strength and flexibility to our program.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age, attend a prospective volunteer orientation event, and complete a background check as well as protecting minors training. Volunteers are expected to contribute at least four hours a month, which can be achieved through one, four-hour shift or multiple shorter shifts.
