All spiritual practice, across all religions, starts with some form of meditation! Meditation is simply the practice of stilling and focusing the mind on a single point to gain insight, deeper awareness, and the ability to work with the subtle energetic world.
Some benefits of meditation:
Anxiety and stress reduction
Inner peace
Heightened spiritual senses
Improved manifestation
Self-awareness
More easeful day-to-day living
Each session begins with a group discussion and q&a with an experienced meditation teacher. We will then have 10-20 minutes of practice together. All levels are encouraged to come, and chairs will be available. Some classes may begin with gentle stretching and may incorporate gentle movement, depending on what the group would like to do that day! Please wear comfortable clothing.

Catch the 4K restoration of director Mike Nichol’s Oscar-winning masterpiece that seduces audiences with its crackling wit, depth of emotion, and Simon & Garfunkel’s moody grandeur. The story of an aimless young man (Dustin Hoffman) adrift in a relationship with the older Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), the impeccably-acted, visually-defiant, cleverly-scripted, musically-driven film perfectly captured the zeitgeist of a generation like no film before, or after. Koo-koo-ka-choo, indeed.
Tickets for the film, part of the Soundtrack Summer series, are $5 for SCAD Card holders, students, seniors, and military, and $8 for the general public. Passes for the full Lucas Soundtrack Summer series are available for $40.

Next Saturday, we’re rolling out a brand new tour. If you’ve followed us for a while, you know our first run at a tour is half-price. We’re going to do something a bit different this time – All proceeds will go to Brandon’s late father’s favorite charity: Children Exceeding Expectations. This is a free school for kids with cancer and life-threatening diseases. The last trip dad and I took was to a fundraiser he hosted for this group. He donated rare bourbons that were auctioned with every cent going to this group. We’ll do the same next week.
Now moving on from the sappy part, the new tour! What is it? Believe it or not, this one isn’t really a history tour at all. It’s our Savannah Orientation Tour.
If you’re new to Savannah or just want to learn some locals’ tips, this is for you.
It’s a crash course on all things Savannah. We’ll give you just enough history to understand why there are so many Squares here, then we’ll dive into the city. You’ll learn of hole-in-the-wall restaurants and seafood shacks, locals-only dives, and maybe even more importantly, which tourist traps to avoid. We’ll stroll one the country’s most beautiful streets and discuss culinary treats unique to Savannah. You’ll also become acquainted with how to best get around the city. In our brief time together, you’ll learn of over 50 uniquely Savannah spots. The best part – You’ll have the opportunity to ask your expert guide any questions you have about this beautiful place.
Give us one hour, and we guarantee we’ll enhance your Savannah stay!
This tour will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 3 in Chippewa Square. As mentioned, the only cost is a donation (Recommended minimum of $15, please). It runs one hour and covers about 3/4 mile. Well even try to get ol’ Max the Mascot there. Walk-ups are welcome, but should we hit capacity, those who RSVP to savtruehistory@gmail.com will have priority.

Eccentric billionaire builds a theme park on an island where — thanks to some prehistoric bug juice — dinosaurs once again roam the earth. What could possibly go wrong? Well, to the sheer delight of moviegoers everywhere – quite a lot. Taking you on a thrill ride of colossally entertaining proportions, a team of scientists (including Sam Neill and Laura Dern) fights for survival amidst an absolutely stirring John Williams score. While the landmark special effects, electrifying action set pieces, and menacing raptors remain undeniably awesome, it is the way the master of movie-making wizardry, Steven Spielberg, speaks to our collective imagination with majestic and awe-inspiring wonder that is the true star attraction.
Tickets for the film, part of the Soundtrack Summer series, are $5 for SCAD Card holders, students, seniors, and military, and $8 for the general public. Passes for the full Lucas Soundtrack Summer series are available for $40.

Wexford – Savannah’s Irish Pub will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, August 9th at 11 AM with special guests, friends, and local Savannah dignitaries and members of our Irish community. Join us after for lunch and a pint of perfectly poured Guinness and live Irish music.
Savannah’s newest and most unique Irish pub was inspired by and named after County Wexford, Ireland, where more than half of Georgia’s Irish emigrants traveled here from in the mid-1800s during the potato famine. In fact, most of the interior was crafted and shipped over from Ireland and assembled in Savannah. In addition to the authenticity, the soul of the new pub is its culinary offerings and beverage menu. Delicious Irish meals accented by an eclectic beer and whiskey collection; live Irish music combined with sincere hospitality promise to make Wexford Pub a new jewel in the crown of Savannah’s most beloved restaurants. We hope everyone will join us in raising a toast at Wexford. Slainte Ya’ll!

Dreaming of a wealthy benefactor leaving your organization $1 million in their will? Stop dreaming…and start asking supporters for planned gifts! Experts say the greatest generational wealth transfer in U.S. history has already started. Even small nonprofits can encourage legacy gifts by implementing just a few tweaks to your current fundraising operations.
Gary Kovar, CFRE, will share easy, effective strategies that lead to estate gifts. Our roundtable discussions will include experienced major gift officers who can mentor you. In addition, each participant will receive a planned giving toolkit with resources including sample policies from the Association of Fundraising
Professionals, and a planned giving pocket guide.
This workshop is designed to demystify planned giving and to provide easy-to implement strategies to encourage estate gifts. It is especially suited for organizations with an established base of at least 100 donors who contribute regularly, regardless of the size of their gifts.

Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) will host a special discussion about “The Revitalization of Waters Avenue” on Thursday, August 15 at the HSF headquarters, located at 321 E. York St., as part of the 2024 Historic Savannah Foundation Lecture Series, “The People, Places and Stories That Define Savannah.” Attendees are invited to a wine reception at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will start at 6 p.m.
This event will feature local preservationist and award-winning small-scale developer Briana Paxton, who will discuss her role in redeveloping a neglected historic building on Waters Avenue and helping to restore this blighted corridor as a hub of local commerce. Through this locally-focused renovation project rooted in preservation best practices, Paxton has provided space for three small businesses, given new life to a historic structure and contributed to the revitalization of Savannah’s historic Waters Avenue corridor.
The revitalization of Waters Avenue officially began in 2015 when the City of Savannah launched a multi-million-dollar Streetscape Plan along Waters Avenue from Victory Drive to Wheaton Street. Improvements included the addition of brick sidewalks, stamped brick crosswalks, landscaping, neighborhood gateways and ornamental lighting.
In 2022, Paxton and fellow Savannah local Brad Baugh purchased a corner building located at 2409 Waters Avenue. The c.1930 building was originally constructed as part of the new Chatham Crescent neighborhood. Over time, numerous businesses occupied the building’s storefronts. In the 1970s, the building served as the Carousel Lounge, an African American disco and jazz bar known for hosting performances by prominent jazz musicians. The building was largely vacant from 1994 to 2002 and later served as a church.
After a meticulous restoration, the building reopened in 2023 with three small businesses, including Cast & Grey Botanical, The Stacks Bookstore and the soon-to-open Good Fortune Market. This renovation project, led by Paxton and her team of local professionals, was honored at the 2024 Historic Savannah Foundation Preservation Awards for demonstrating the highest level of excellence for preservation in Savannah and Chatham County.
Paxton, a long-time volunteer with HSF, was named the nonprofit organization’s Volunteer of the Year in 2022 for her efforts to support HSF’s affordable housing initiatives. Recently, Paxton examined the widespread impact of historic housing practices and shared her findings at TEDxSavannah 2024, where she served as a featured speaker and delivered an inspiring talk entitled “Converging Lines: Redlining and Zoning in Savannah, Georgia.” In addition to her local contributions, Paxton brings the preservationist voice to Congress as the Chairwoman of Preservation Action, a grassroots lobbying group dedicated to historic preservation.
Historic Savannah Foundation’s 2024 Lecture Series is open to the public. Reservations are recommended, as space is limited. Attendance is free for Historic Savannah Foundation members and $15 for non-members. Members and non-members may RSVP by emailing Kendall Graham at kgraham@myhsf.org or calling 912-233-7787, ext. 109.

The program highlights the negative impacts of marine debris on wildlife and habitats and encourages the use of trawl to trash bags, created from recycled nets on commercial shrimp trawlers, to collect and remove debris from Georgia’s waterways. Participants will learn how to construct their own trawl to trash bags using recycled shrimp net material so that it can be used to collect marine debris along the coast!
