The Society of Bluffton Artists’ (SOBA) 29th Annual Judged Show features local artists in acrylic, mixed media, oil, pastel, photography, watercolor or 3D.

The winning works of art will display from March 6-April 2 at the SOBA gallery. An awards ceremony will take place from 4-6 p.m. March 9. These events are free to attend and open to the public. Artists can pick up unsold artwork at the end of the show from 9-11 a.m. April 3rd, 2023 at The SOBA Art School.

The judge for the show is Eve Miller. Miller is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the Master Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies. Eve is also a signature member of the Pastel Society of Spain and Fellow Maxima Cum Laude at the American Artists Professional League. Her works have been featured in numerous publications and she presently exhibits her work in three international juried exhibitions in France. As an art instructor and mentor, she conducts workshops in the U.S. and abroad. Her goal is to share how to communicate the beauty one finds in landscape by utilizing the elements of design. Her goal is to establish a spiritual connection between herself, the painting and the viewer.

‘Bold Expressions: The Collection of Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum’ celebrates collecting and living with original works of art through a presentation of the collection of the late Lorlee and Arnold Tenenbaum. Remembered for their business acumen, love of community, and generous philanthropic efforts, the Tenenbaums were deeply invested in art and education, which extended to their colossal efforts to raise funds to construct Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center.

The Tenenbaum collection defies categorization―crossing borders, time periods, styles, techniques, and mediums. Showcasing prints, paintings, drawings, and ceramics by artists such as Marc Chagall, Diego Rivera, Andy Warhol, Fritz Scholder, and Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith, the exhibition is at once a portrait of the individual and wide-ranging tastes of one couple, but also an exploration into what it means to love art and express oneself boldly and unabashedly through collecting. In addition to enjoying the variety of work and finding their favorites, visitors are encouraged to ponder the concept of collecting and displaying art in various domestic and museum settings—perhaps inspiring their own discovery of new artists. Ultimately, ‘Bold Expressions’ honors the artists who enhance our lives and the local collectors whose passions support art and its makers.

Joe Robinson is a true force in the pantheon of exceptional artists in modern music. He has joined an exclusive group of elite performers whose impact continues to shape our unique American musical culture. With his popularity continuing to rise, Robinson has earned a reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players and a brilliant singer/songwriter. His fluid and inimitable style has delighted audiences around the world, garnering high praise and prestigious awards from the international music community.

Celebrated for distinctive live performances spanning American and international roots music, jazz, classical, jam, rock, and blues genres in beautiful, historic Savannah, Ga., the Savannah Music Festival (SMF) is pleased to announce its 2023 season, which runs from March 23 through April 8, 2023.

Called “one of the Southeast’s most creative cross-cultural musical events” by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the 17-day festival has been raising the bar each year by showcasing an exceptional cross section of award-winning icons, trailblazing contemporaries and dynamic newcomers. SMF 2023 features a series of outdoor performances at Trustees’ Garden, including two nights showcasing living legend and blues pioneer Buddy Guy on his “Damn Right Farewell” tour with special guests Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Eric Gales, King Solomon Hicks and Jontavious Willis. The Tedeschi Trucks Band returns after a four-year hiatus, and New Orleans jam favorites Galactic teams up with funk maestro Cory Wong and the jazz, R&B and pop fusion of Nate Smith KINFOLK for a special performance.

Classical highlights include the Philip Dukes & Friends chamber music series, led by the world-renowned viola player and SMF Associate Artistic Director Dukes. A concert by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, also with Dukes and former SMF Artistic Director Daniel Hope, represents a symbolic passing of the baton from Hope to Dukes. Additionally, the esteemed chamber ensemble the Emerson String Quartet makes a stop in Savannah on their final tour, the Dover Quartet performs with Savannah’s own Joseph Conyers, and acclaimed emerging pianists Alexander Malofeev and Drew Petersen give recitals.

Also known for unique artist collaborations, the 2023 festival will offer a number of one-time-only programs and special double bills. Melding world music with Americana, Malian master of the ngoni (precursor to the banjo) Bassekou Kouyate shares a bill with Jake Blount, scholar/performer of the Black string band tradition, appearing with Nic Gareiss and Laurel Premo. Master old-time and bluegrass practitioners Bruce Molsky, Tony Trischka and Michael Daves share the stage with The Onlies, which finds the mentors alongside a young, award-winning string band. Newgrass pioneers Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas share the stage, with Bush’s set featuring the inimitable music of the late John Hartford. Acclaimed jazz violinist Regina Carter offers “Gone in a Phrase of Air,” an original music and multimedia performance that explores the effects of the urban renewal of the 1950s and 1960s. Kenny Barron, Dave Holland and Johnathan Blake celebrate Barron’s 80th birthday, Terence Blanchard & E-Collective perform with the Turtle Island Quartet, and Grammy Award-nominated jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant shares the stage with vocal sextet San Salvador.

Always exceeding expectations for festival goers who are eager to discover new favorites, 2023 debut artists include Terence Blanchard, Patty Griffin, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Leo Kottke, Regina Carter, Sona Jobarteh, Natu Camara, Stanton Moore Trio, Los Lobos, The Alt with Oisin McAuley, Téada, S.G. Goodman, Harold Lopez-Nussa’s “Timba a la Americana” and more. Additional highlights include a Zydeco Dance Party featuring Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys, a Latin Dance Party with Eddie Palmieri’s Latin Jazz Band, as well as a Cajun Dance Party featuring The Lost Bayou Ramblers.

On Thursday, March 23rd, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, Pin Point Heritage Museum will host its annual “Art & Oysters,” a coastal-themed fundraising event featuring a silent auction of original artwork presented by local artists. Guests are invited to meet and greet with the participating artists and enjoy an evening on the Moon River marsh. Proceeds from the auction will support educational programs and operations at Pin Point Heritage Museum.

“We are thrilled to bring this event back after a three-year hiatus,” said Nora Fleming Lee, CEO of Coastal Heritage Society. “Art and Oysters is a wonderful event to celebrate community artists, share the stories, culture, language, and lifeways of the Gullah-Geechee community, and support Pin Point Heritage Museum!”

The Savannah Ballet Theatre (SBT) will present a new production of the ballet adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 24 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 25. Both will be performed at the Ben Tucker Theater, located at 201 Montgomery Street in downtown Savannah. Featuring performances by SBT’s world-renowned professional dancers, this one-of-a-kind 50-minute ballet is perfect for all ages.

Shakespeare’s iconic comedy of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a story of love, marriage, and appearance. The audience will be able to join Puck, Bottom, and woodland fairies for this mischievous tale of love told through the interpretation of ballet.

“We are thrilled to be bringing this Shakespearian classic to the community and adapting it so that people of all ages can enjoy,” said SBT artistic director Suzanne Braddy. “This is a delightful uplifting production, so we encourage the community to come out and experience it with us!”
