The Herman Lodinger Memorial Lecture is on April 25th at 6:30 pm at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Retired Pastor, Chris Edmonds, son of World War II hero Master Sergeant, Roddie Edmonds, will speak on his father’s selfless actions to protect the Jewish soldiers in a German POW camp under his command. The program is free and open to the public.
Chris Edmonds presentation is based on his award-winning book, No Surrender: A Father, A Son, and an Extraordinary Act of Heroism that Continues to Live on Today. Both the book and Chris Edmonds’ presentation chronicle MSgt. Edmonds’ selfless actions to protect his Jewish brothers through moral courage, servant leadership, and unwavering faith.
This lecture is made possible through the Herman Lodinger Endowment Fund, established for the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force by a gift from Mr. Lodinger’s daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Paul Mandelkern. Second Lieutenant Herman Lodinger was a lead bombardier on a B-24 heavy bomber assigned to the 389th Bomb Group. His plane was shot down in July 1944, and he was captured by the Germans and held prisoner until his 1945 liberation.

Professor Patricio DellaGiovanna, Professor and Project Coordinator of the Center for International Studies (CEI) at the Pontifical Catholic University Of Argentina, Buenos Aires will present:

“Argentina Politics and Economy, and the Direct Influence of World Powers in South America”

Argentina, a key global actor, has become a center of attention for foreign investors after the unexpected electoral victory of President Javier Milei. Argentina faces great challenges: rampant inflation, currency depreciation, and a sharp increase in poverty, accompanied by a rise in organized crime related to drug trafficking. But it benefits from support from the U.S., Europe and international financial institutions; it is rich in critical natural resources, a major food producer to the world, and a gateway to Antarctica. China and Russia are competing for influence in Argentina; President Milei talks about a strategic alliance with the U.S. The course of Argentina’s economic reform will affect this competition for influence. Professor Patricio Dellagiovanna, who is visiting Savannah as a member of an Argentinian Rotary delegation, will bring you real time analysis of all this and its significance for U.S. relations with South America more broadly.

Event Details

Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) – the leading nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to saving the buildings, places and stories that define Savannah’s past, present and future – will celebrate the pinnacle of preservation at the 2024 HSF Preservation Awards. At this special awards ceremony, Historic Savannah Foundation will recognize projects, individuals, organizations and companies exemplifying excellence in preservation in Savannah and Chatham County.

The winners of these prestigious awards are selected from nominations of projects that were completed within the past three years and fall within at least one of several categories: restoration, rehabilitation, new construction, stewardship, craftsmanship or archaeology. A jury of local professionals in architecture, preservation, academia and urban planning selects the projects that represent the pinnacle of preservation to be honored at Savannah’s premier National Preservation Month event.

The 2024 HSF Preservation Awards event is open to the public and will feature the Big Bon Bodega Pizza Truck, beer and wine. Attendees are invited to wear casual attire and to enjoy delicious food and great company.

Lead event sponsors include Galvan Foundation, Queensborough National Bank and Trust Company, Landmark Preservation and Felder & Associates Architecture and Design. Descendants of Ossabaw, and former participants in the Ossabaw Island Project and Genesis, and Sandy West-era university programs are invited to spend a day on Ossabaw Island, Georgia’s third largest barrier island.

Did your parents, grandparents or other ancestors live, work or own land on Ossabaw Island from 1760 – 1980?
Were they tenant farmers, enslaved people, Torrey Family employees, land owners, Freedmen, hunting guides, timbermen, or cattlemen?
Were you an Ossabaw Island Project or Genesis Project participant between 1961 – 1983?
Did you visit Ossabaw as a student on one of Eleanor “Sandy” Torrey West’s university programs?

Please join us as the Ossabaw Island Foundation brings Ossabaw’s people together for a day of food, friendship, history, and remembrance.

Travel one hour by pontoon cruising boat through the Moon River District’s rivers and creeks, across Ossabaw Sound to the island’s North End. The day’s events will include optional tours to learn about Ossabaw’s 5,000 years of human history, and where your people’s roles fit into that timeline.

Optional tours: Ossabaw’s North End, including the Club House, the Boarding House, and the three tabby slave cabins, all restored in the last 20 years.

Middle Place, site of the founding of Hinder Me Not Baptist Church, by the Bond brothers. Also the site of the stables for the Torrey family, and of a sawmill owned and operated by the Torreys, and of Genesis, the semi-self-sustainable community created by Mrs. Eleanor “Sandy” Torrey West.

The Torrey West House, former winter residence of the Torrey Family, and site of the Ossabaw Island Project, an interdisciplinary creative program created by Mrs. West.

Enjoy a box lunch you take with you as you explore Ossabaw Island , then return to the mainland on a late afternoon cruise through the Moon River District.
