​​Ships of the Sea will unveil Sea of Ink: Savannah Maritime Tattoos, an extraordinary exhibit showcasing the art and cultural significance of tattoos. Featuring more than a dozen Savannah-area tattoo artists and over 30 maritime tattoo collectors, Sea of Ink highlights tattoos as a meaningful art form and cultural movement.

With one-third of American adults having at least one tattoo, this visual language is rich for exploration. Sea of Ink presents the tattoo not just as body art, but as a powerful instrument for storytelling. Tattoos tell stories that often are deeply meaningful to the collector, and are a result of an artistic understanding between the tattoo creator and the collector.​​

Before televisions, computers, and high-speed internet, everyday Americans engaged with image-based storytelling through illustration. Illustration is art created to be reproduced for books, magazines, periodicals, advertisements, and other printed media. Designed covers—based on finished paintings—by artists like Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) regularly reached thousands of homes via mass-produced publications such as “The Saturday Evening Post.” Celebrating the charming, wholesome, and seemingly commonplace, Rockwell enjoyed a successful career, which unfolded against a string of era-defining crises and revolutions, including two World Wars, the Great Depression, struggles over Civil Rights, and space exploration. Through illustration, Rockwell and his peers chronicled the transformation and challenging of ideals in the 20th-century, sometimes using childhood to explore complex subject matter. By tapping into American adults’ nostalgia and their associations of childhood with innocence, these artists made subjects from consumer goods to wartime politics more appealing. Through advertisements and calendar illustrations, magazine covers, and story artwork, ‘Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood’ regards childhood as an expressive and revealing lens to view an evolving and often complex American society.

Produced by Family Entertainment Live, “Magic of Lights” will make its debut at SOUTH GEORGIA STATE FAIR in SAVANNAH GA showcasing dozens of displays, festive favorites, and digital animations—all crafted with millions of LED lights to create a memorable holiday experience for the entire family.

For the 2024 season, the brand-new MagicVision Selfie Filters will be unveiled featuring fun filters that will transform your selfies into festive holiday-themed images, perfect for sharing with friends and family.
Other dazzling displays include the 32-foot-tall animated Mattel’s Waving Christmas Barbie®, a Prehistoric Christmas scene with life-sized dinosaurs celebrating the season, and the iconic BIGFOOT® Monster Truck. Telfair Museums presents a solo exhibition of iconic digital art by Jim Campbell (b. 1956), whose light-based works explore the limits of human perception. Holding degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics from MIT, along with patents for his work in development of high-definition video, Campbell is widely known for his low-resolution moving images created by arrays of LEDS. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to the San Francisco-based artist’s works in the Southeast and will coincide with Telfair’s 2025 PULSE Art Technology Festival.

Black Nativity, written by Langston Hughes, is a soul-stirring rendition of the Christmas Story that combines elements of theatre, music, and dance to create a unique and captivating performance. This retelling of the classic Nativity story brings a fresh and exciting perspective to the timeless tale.

The performance features a blend of traditional gospel music, powerful vocal performances, and vibrant choreography. The story unfolds in a series of dramatic scenes and musical numbers that will take your breath away.

The Davenport House Museum will put a festive holiday spin on daily guided tours, offering special Yuletide Tours from November 20, 2024 through January 4, 2025.

Yuletide Tours invite locals and visitors to experience the holiday traditions practiced in early 19th-century Savannah. These family-friendly tours will guide guests through the decked halls of the 204-year-old Federal-style home and offer insight into how the Davenport family celebrated the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays.

Yuletide Tours also include access to the Urban Enslaved Exhibit, an immersive experience that sheds light on the lives of the 13 enslaved individuals who lived and worked at the Davenport House. Guests will gain insight into how these individuals observed and were impacted by the holiday season.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students, $10 for children and free for children under 6 years of age as well as Historic Savannah Foundation members. Senior and military discounts are available at the door. The Davenport House is open Monday through Saturday and will be closed on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The Savannah African Art Museum hosts their third annual Kwanzaa Marketplace from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Museum’s Courtyard, located at 201 East 37th Street. The marketplace will feature vendors of the African Diaspora selling various handcrafted items such as jewelry, art, clothing, and more. The Museum’s Kwanzaa Marketplace is a public event for the local and tourism community to celebrate and learn more about the African-American cultural holiday, Kwanzaa, which is based on the African Celebration of “First Fruits.” The festivity provides a unique holiday shopping experience that introduces and supports the creative works by local artisans of the African Diaspora.
