Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum—an acclaimed museum dedicated to celebrating and preserving America’s maritime legacy—is delighted to present “Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky,” an exciting new solo exhibition featuring nautical-inspired, mixed-media art by Rob Strati, from September 25, 2025 through April 12, 2026.
“Beyond the Plate” will showcase new work by one of America’s hottest contemporary artists. Strati has recently enjoyed sold-out exhibits at Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis and FREMIN Gallery in New York and has sold work to top international art collectors in New York, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and beyond. Strati’s art incorporates broken porcelain plates that have been embellished and adorned with creative details. The exhibition features the artist’s latest bold, kinetic mixed-media works and limited-edition prints as well as an ambitious site-specific installation that will be suspended from the ceiling of the Ships of the Sea atrium.
Strati’s latest series was inspired by a porcelain plate from his wife’s late mother, which accidentally fell and broke into fragments. In order to preserve the shards of the shattered plate, and the memory of someone vitally important to both him and his wife, the artist began working on his “Fragmented” series, using pen and paper to “explore the possibilities of things broken and the stories that can evolve from the pieces left behind.”
Each piece of Strati’s art starts with the breaking of a porcelain plate and takes approximately two weeks to complete. Although the artist is rigorous about his creative process, he always allows space for spontaneous ideas to emerge from the fragments. Over time, he has learned important lessons about art and life by creating new works of art from broken shards.
Strati describes his work as a “mix of chaos and control” that is constantly evolving. He hopes his upcoming exhibition at Ships of the Sea will inspire visitors to think about time, creativity and beauty in fresh, new ways. All of the art in “Beyond the Plate” will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.
ABOUT ROBERT STRATI: Originally from Boston, Strati grew up in Columbus, Ohio and earned a B.A. in History of Art from Ohio State University. His art has been exhibited at leading international museums and art galleries and has been featured in The Art Newspaper, Whitehot Magazine, Reclaim, Beaux Arts, Sculpture Magazine, Vice and The Village Voice. Strati’s work and “Beyond the Plate” will also be featured in ARTS Southeast’s fall issue of IMPACT Magazine in October 2025.

Throughout her storied career, actress Glenn Close has collaborated closely with costume designers to help bring the characters she embodies to life. Inspired by the creativity and craftsmanship she saw in her film and theater productions, she began collecting and preserving costumes and accessories from her projects after her first movie, The World According to Garp (1982). In 2017, she donated her over 800-piece collection to the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection in the School of Art, Architecture Design at Indiana University.
First presented at the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University in 2020, The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection will offer visitors a unique opportunity to thoroughly explore the careful consideration and exacting details that teams of designers, drapers, and other craftspeople created in over 50 ensembles and numerous examples of jewelry, shoes, and other accessories. It will feature the work of award-winning costume designers, including Anthony Powell (1935–2021), Ann Roth (b. 1949), James Acheson (b. 1946), and Alexandra Byrne (b. 1962), and costumers like Barbara Matera Ltd (active 1968–2001), from 14 of Close’s best-loved movies.

Abstract:
Come here the latest on the multiple crises in the Middle East. At the transition point from President Biden to President Trump, the Middle East was fragile, latently volatile but ripe with equal measures of promise and peril following the historic changes in Lebanon and Syria. But nine months on, the region has seen a three-sided war, a new Israeli offensive in Gaza, and Qatar caught in the middle. Come hear an informed analysis of these latest developments and the challenges and opportunities facing the U.S. Ambassador Barbara Leaf, one of our country’s foremost experts on the Middle East, will explore policy options for the Trump administration, potential scenarios for ending the Gaza conflict, and risks to U.S. national security interests if the region continues on its unsettled trajectory. In addition to serving as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf was Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa. She is now retired from the U.S. Foreign Service and is currently Senior International Policy Advisor at the firm of Arnold and Porter in Washington, DC.
Bio: Ambassador Barbara A. Leaf served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, developing and implementing policies and programs for 18 countries from Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula. Drawing on her extensive experience with the Gulf in particular, Ambassador Leaf energetically promoted U.S. efforts to further regional economic integration through new multilateral transportation and trade corridors linking India through the Gulf to Israel and Europe.
In 2021, Ambassador Leaf joined the Biden administration as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa, where she led interagency policy coordination and developed recommendations to the U.S. national security leadership and the President on all regional issues. She supported the President in his engagements with the region’s leaders on matters ranging from ending the 2011 Israel-Hamas conflict, countering Iran’s destabilizing regional activities, and deepening economic and security cooperation with key Gulf partners. From 2018 to 2021, as a fellow at The Washington Institute, Ambassador Leaf directed the Beth and David Gedud Program on Arab Politics. She spoke and wrote regularly on Iraq, Iran, and Gulf Politics, as well as on broader U.S. foreign and national security policy.
Ambassador Leaf served from 2014-2018 as U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates in a diplomatic mission focused on expanding bilateral trade and economic ties, defense and security affairs, counterterrorism, counterproliferation, and law enforcement cooperation. Prior to her assignment as Chief of Mission, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Arabian Peninsula from 2013-2014, overseeing 10 diplomatic posts in the Gulf states and Yemen.
As Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq from 2011-2013, Ambassador Leaf oversaw the transformation of U.S. Mission Iraq to a civilian-led enterprise. Leaving an assignment as Political Minister Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Ambassador Leaf directed the 100-member U.S. Provincial Reconstruction Team, a stabilization mission in the strategic province of Basrah, Iraq from 2010-2011.
