Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum—an acclaimed museum dedicated to celebrating and preserving America’s maritime legacy—is delighted to present “Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky,” an exciting new solo exhibition featuring nautical-inspired, mixed-media art by Rob Strati, from September 25, 2025 through April 12, 2026.
“Beyond the Plate” will showcase new work by one of America’s hottest contemporary artists. Strati has recently enjoyed sold-out exhibits at Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis and FREMIN Gallery in New York and has sold work to top international art collectors in New York, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and beyond. Strati’s art incorporates broken porcelain plates that have been embellished and adorned with creative details. The exhibition features the artist’s latest bold, kinetic mixed-media works and limited-edition prints as well as an ambitious site-specific installation that will be suspended from the ceiling of the Ships of the Sea atrium.
Strati’s latest series was inspired by a porcelain plate from his wife’s late mother, which accidentally fell and broke into fragments. In order to preserve the shards of the shattered plate, and the memory of someone vitally important to both him and his wife, the artist began working on his “Fragmented” series, using pen and paper to “explore the possibilities of things broken and the stories that can evolve from the pieces left behind.”
Each piece of Strati’s art starts with the breaking of a porcelain plate and takes approximately two weeks to complete. Although the artist is rigorous about his creative process, he always allows space for spontaneous ideas to emerge from the fragments. Over time, he has learned important lessons about art and life by creating new works of art from broken shards.
Strati describes his work as a “mix of chaos and control” that is constantly evolving. He hopes his upcoming exhibition at Ships of the Sea will inspire visitors to think about time, creativity and beauty in fresh, new ways. All of the art in “Beyond the Plate” will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.
ABOUT ROBERT STRATI: Originally from Boston, Strati grew up in Columbus, Ohio and earned a B.A. in History of Art from Ohio State University. His art has been exhibited at leading international museums and art galleries and has been featured in The Art Newspaper, Whitehot Magazine, Reclaim, Beaux Arts, Sculpture Magazine, Vice and The Village Voice. Strati’s work and “Beyond the Plate” will also be featured in ARTS Southeast’s fall issue of IMPACT Magazine in October 2025.

Throughout her storied career, actress Glenn Close has collaborated closely with costume designers to help bring the characters she embodies to life. Inspired by the creativity and craftsmanship she saw in her film and theater productions, she began collecting and preserving costumes and accessories from her projects after her first movie, The World According to Garp (1982). In 2017, she donated her over 800-piece collection to the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection in the School of Art, Architecture Design at Indiana University.
First presented at the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University in 2020, The Art of the Character: Highlights from the Glenn Close Costume Collection will offer visitors a unique opportunity to thoroughly explore the careful consideration and exacting details that teams of designers, drapers, and other craftspeople created in over 50 ensembles and numerous examples of jewelry, shoes, and other accessories. It will feature the work of award-winning costume designers, including Anthony Powell (1935–2021), Ann Roth (b. 1949), James Acheson (b. 1946), and Alexandra Byrne (b. 1962), and costumers like Barbara Matera Ltd (active 1968–2001), from 14 of Close’s best-loved movies.
This exhibition is organized by Telfair Museums in partnership with the Elizabeth Sage Historic Costume Collection at the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design of Indiana University.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’s monthly Author Talk series is proud to present Jean Allen, who will be discussing her book, on her uncle, William Davis Allen | Beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, 2nd Lt., American Navigator. This program will take place on October 18th at 11:00 am at the museum.
The program is free to the public, but please register at https://forms.gle/HQXTsF9RNdqmi2m6A
About the Book
In April 1944, fresh out of the Army Air Forces Navigation School, newly commissioned officer, 2nd LT William D. Allen, arrived in the European Theater of Operations, Thurleigh, England. He was assigned to the 306th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 423rd Bomb Squadron, Eighth Air Force, and suddenly thrust into navigating combat missions over Germany and France. Following the Normandy invasion, U.S. and Allied combat missions continued to help quell the advance of German soldiers and military equipment to France’s northern coast.
The 306th’s mission on 15 June 1944 was fraught with more peril than the airmen could have imagined. Once the 54 Flying Fortress B-17s arrived over France, and dropped bombs on railroad bridges being used by Germans, a barrage of 88 mm anti-aircraft artillery filled the skies, exploding into and around the B-17s, striking more than half the formation. William’s plane was hit badly and the pilot ordered his crew of eight airmen to “BAIL OUT!” The stunned airmen were suddenly parachuting into smokey, noisy, dangerous skies. They watched the rest of the formation continue on the mission as their B-17 hurtled to the ground. They must have been filled with a foreboding sense of dread knowing enemy forces surely had seen their parachutes against the morning sky. Little did they realize, French villagers below would risk their lives trying to help them. What transpired over the next 11 hours was nothing short of shocking and terrifying, starting with one French villager’s deadly betrayal–her traitorous collaboration with Nazis…
The men and women who sacrificed and served during World War II saved the world from fascism.
