​​Ships of the Sea will unveil Sea of Ink: Savannah Maritime Tattoos, an extraordinary exhibit showcasing the art and cultural significance of tattoos. Featuring more than a dozen Savannah-area tattoo artists and over 30 maritime tattoo collectors, Sea of Ink highlights tattoos as a meaningful art form and cultural movement.

With one-third of American adults having at least one tattoo, this visual language is rich for exploration. Sea of Ink presents the tattoo not just as body art, but as a powerful instrument for storytelling. Tattoos tell stories that often are deeply meaningful to the collector, and are a result of an artistic understanding between the tattoo creator and the collector.​​

Telfair Museums presents a solo exhibition of iconic digital art by Jim Campbell (b. 1956), whose light-based works explore the limits of human perception. Holding degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics from MIT, along with patents for his work in development of high-definition video, Campbell is widely known for his low-resolution moving images created by arrays of LEDS. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to the San Francisco-based artist’s works in the Southeast and will coincide with Telfair’s 2025 PULSE Art Technology Festival.

‘Venice and the Ottoman Empire’ brings more than 100 artworks from Venice’s largest and oldest museums to Telfair for a rare glimpse into this intriguing center of exchange. It features paintings, costume, textiles, leatherwork, metalwork, and ceramics from the 15th through 18th centuries that are not often exhibited outside of Italy, including works recovered from a shipwreck. Visitors also will learn about how these historical designs inspired 20th-century textile and fashion designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo to create the luminous fabrics that are still manufactured in Venice and prized by connoisseurs today.

Drawn from Telfair Museums’ permanent collection, Primary: Artists Working in Red, Yellow, and Blue explores how artists have utilized primary colors in adventurous ways to elicit brilliant experiences. Featuring works by Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, and Joan Miró, these energetic and dynamic compositions introduce viewers to the expansive possibilities of a simple palette.

“Old Chan Magic: Chinese Roots, Southern Branches,” a new exhibit curated by Davenport House Museum Executive Director Danielle Hodes and featuring a wide range of historic photography, will open at Historic Savannah Foundation’s Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center, located at 323 E. Broughton St., on Thursday, January 16 and run through May 2025.

The exhibit shares the fascinating story of the Chan family who lived in the iconic 1820 home when it operated as a tenement in the early 20th century, before the Davenport House was saved from demolition and renovated as a 19th-century house museum. “Old Chan Magic: Chinese Roots, Southern Branches” expands the narrative at the Davenport House, marking the first exhibition that has focused on the period in the 20th century when the home operated as a tenement building.

“Old Chan Magic” will explore the life and legacy of the Chan family in Savannah in the early 1900s. This exhibition features rare photographs and stories that reveal the daily lives of the Chan family, their business endeavors and their experience as part of a growing Chinese-American community in the South in the early 20th century. Through these images, visitors will discover a unique perspective on the intersection of Chinese heritage and Southern identity during a pivotal time in Savannah’s history.

In 1889, Robert Chung Chan became one of Savannah’s first Chinese immigrants. Robert and his wife, Annie, lived in the Davenport House from 1901 to 1902 while operating a Chinese laundry in what is now the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy. Their story embodies the broader experience of early Chinese immigrants in America while uniquely reflecting Savannah’s cultural landscape, shaped in large part by Robert’s leadership, influence, and social connections.

The “Old Chan Magic: Chinese Roots, Southern Branches” exhibit will be on display from January 16 through May 2025. The exhibit is free and open to the public. To learn more, please visit davenporthousemuseum.org.

‘Tideland’ is an exhibition of black and white photographs by Savannah-based photographer Parker Stewart (b. 1992). Taken between 2020 and 2024, these evocative photographs document the coast of Georgia by transporting the viewer into the visceral and primordial atmosphere of the barrier islands and inland waterways.

Join us for a program focused on capturing the beauty of nature through short videos! This beginner-friendly program will explore digital nature journaling using a smartphone. Learn simple filming techniques, from framing and focus to movement, before taking a walk on our nature trail where you’ll discover the sights and sounds of the salt marsh and maritime forest. No advanced technical skills are required. This program is perfect for nature lovers and creatives alike, it’s an opportunity to slow down, observe, and transform everyday outdoor experiences into lasting visual memories.

Registration is required and includes admission to the UGA Aquarium. This program is designed for participants ages 16 and up. All participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by a registered adult. Tickets are nonrefundable.

Fort Pulaski National Monument will commemorate the 163rd Anniversary of the Bombardment of Fort Pulaski on Saturday March 29 and Saturday April 5, 2025 with ranger talks and historic weapons demonstrations from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day.

The Coffee Bluff Marine Rescue Squadron will be holding its annual Barbecue Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at the squadron’s Coffee Bluff facility located at the end of White Bluff Road on the Forrest River. The barbecue will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. This popular event sells over 2,500 dinners and requires cooking 2,700 pounds of pork! Dinners will cost $12.00 each and include barbecue, coleslaw, Brunswick stew, and a roll.

The Coffee Bluff Marine Rescue Squadron is a nonprofit marine search and rescue operation serving the Coastal Empire and surrounding areas. For over six decades, the Coffee Bluff Marine Rescue Squadron has provided many thousands of manhours on various missions including the search and rescue of stranded boaters, support of local authorities in drowning victim searches, and water safety support at marine events. All activities of the Coffee Bluff Marine Rescue Squadron are executed by experienced volunteers at no charge to boaters.

Marine Rescue Squadrons of America (MRS) was established in January 1959 by Tybee Island Police Chief David McCutchen, Perry Solomon, and others on Tybee Island. The need for the MRS developed after it was realized that the Coast Guard, due to the large size of its vessels, could not render aid in all circumstances. Since its inception, eleven squadrons have been organized across Georgia and South Carolina.

Andrew Morris is a self-taught gardener who has created a life centered around teaching people to grow their own food and supplying them with the tools they need for success.

Andrew opened Savannah Hydroponics & Organics in January 2009 to fill the need for a local source of specialty gardening and hydroponic supplies here in the Lowcountry. Born and raised in southern California where he was exposed to gardening, recycling, and composting at an early age, he was taught the benefits of sustainable living. Leaving SoCal for the mountains of Lake Tahoe as a young adult, his love for growing plants truly emerged. With snow on the ground up to eight months of the year, he started using lighting and hydroponic systems to grow plants year round indoors. After leaving California, he lived in Hawaii for almost two years, where, between his jobs as a boat captain, he helped his friends with a gardening store in Maui. He found his way to the Lowcountry via Harbor Town Marina after a period of living and working on yachts.
