"Mid-Century Modern: Its Origins and How it Was Applied in Savannah"

Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) will host an informative, engaging HSF Lecture titled “Mid-Century Modern: Its Origins and How it Was Applied in Savannah” on Thurs., Sept. 17th at the Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center, located in the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy at 323 E. Broughton St. in Savannah, Ga. Attendees are invited to attend a wine reception at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will start at 6 p.m.

Part of the ongoing HSF Lecture Series titled “The People, Places and Stories that Define Savannah,” guest speaker Jonathan Stalcup, the founder of Architectural Tours of Savannah, will share how shifting mindsets and evolving aesthetics of the mid-20th-century shaped the city’s architectural style and impacted Savannah’s urban fabric.

From its founding in 1733, Savannah has kept current with architectural trends happening worldwide. During the rise and expansion of modernism, the mid-20th century saw an upheaval in styles around the globe. In his lecture, Stalcup will reveal how Savannah responded to the availability of new material, changes in construction techniques, lifestyle shifts and the overall building appearances of this new movement.

ABOUT JONATHAN STALCUP: Originally from Madison County, Iowa, Stalcup earned a Master of Architecture degree from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Throughout college, Stalcup gave tours through Savannah’s top house museums and founded Architectural Tours of Savannah, LLC upon graduation. For more than 20 years, Stalcup has been sharing Savannah’s history with visitors and locals through the city’s built environment. Stalcup is also the author of “Savannah Architectural Tours,” a guidebook that takes readers on a journey through Savannah’s past, introduces them to the city’s historic architecture and identifies the notable architects who gave Savannah its distinctive look.
