Event Details
Fort McAllister State Historic Park is hosting a winter muster and reenactment of the final battle fought in Georgia during the Civil War, marking the end of Sherman’s March to the Sea in December 1864, 160 years ago. This living history program will allow visitors to experience what it was like in the events leading up to the final assault and includes reenactments, cannon and musket firings, military drills, an informative video, and fort and museum tours (included with admission).
On Friday, December 13 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., visitors can tour the Union camps, view Confederates getting ready for the impending attack, and explore the fort and museum. On Saturday, December 14, encampment tours continue from 8 a.m. – 12 noon. Then, at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, visitors can witness the reenactment of the final assault, which marked the end of Sherman’s March to the Sea. Guests must be in place by 4 p.m. to experience the final assault.
Private evening tours on Friday and Saturday night are also available and will allow participants an up-close-and-personal experience as to what was going on at the fort the night before and after the battle. Participants will get to see things like torpedo placement, evening artillery engagement, wounded soldier treatment, and the officers’ dinner between Union and Confederate commanders. Because of the small, intimate nature of these private tours, tickets are limited.

ABOUT FORT MCALLISTER STATE HISTORIC PARK:
Located close to I-95 south of Savannah on the banks of the Ogeechee River, this scenic park showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. The earthworks were attacked seven times by Union ironclads but did not fall until 1864—ending General William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea.” Visitors can explore the grounds with cannons, a hot shot furnace, bombproof barracks, palisades and more, while a Civil War museum contains artifacts, a video and gift shop.
Nestled among giant live oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh, this park is a beautiful location for camping, fishing, boating and picnicking. Seven cabins sit on stilts near the marsh, surrounded by palm trees and palmettos. The shaded campground is bordered by tidal Redbird Creek, a boat ramp, fishing dock and nature trail. A large picnic area offers river views and playgrounds, while another boat ramp provides access to the Ogeechee River.
