Celebrate Earth Day and our Ocean with Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary! This day of action for a healthy ocean with activities to rethink plastics and giving back through volunteering. Always free admission.

11 a.m.–Noon | Recycle, Repurpose, Replant:
What’s better than native plants? Native plants in a recycled container, of course! Come decorate a home for your plant and also get a free plant.

1–2 p.m. | Dive Deep into Microplastics:
Ever wondered what happens to plastic when we can’t see it anymore? Join us for a class on small plastics causing a big problem in our environment, and what can be done to help keep them out of our ocean! Filter water from Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and use a microscope to identify and count microplastics in our backyard.

2:30–3:30 p.m. | Make your own EcoBricks:
Give your plastic trash a second life and keep it out of landfills with EcoBricks. Learn how to make your own EcoBrick, and what we can do with our single-use plastic to build a new future!

10 a.m.–4 p.m. | Volunteer to Share the Wonder this Summer:
Volunteer at the Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center this summer as a Center Visitor Specialist. Students 16 years of age and older are encouraged to share their passion for marine conservation, network with scientists and educators, and build their résumé. Student volunteers should bring two forms of ID (for example, a valid driver’s license, AND a US Passport, OR birth certificate, OR social security card.

Event Details

Ayo Ngozi is a tenant farmer, a lifetime home gardener, and a community herbalist. She is a graduate of the Maryland University of Integrative Health and is on the faculty of several herbal schools and programs, including the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism (VT), Wild Ginger Community Herb Center (MD and Costa Rica), and Seed, Soil Spirit School (Toronto, ON). Ayo is currently developing Brickyard Gardens, a nonprofit teaching farm in Garden City. You can find her on Instagram at @ayo.herbalist and @brickyardgardens.savannah.

Join us for this hands-on experience outdoors at Tasty Farms, our experimental farm located right beside the shop at 4107 8th Street, Suite C, Garden City (next to the Savannah State Farmer’s Market.). Please dress accordingly.

(Gardening Resources Offering Wellness) a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to foster self-sufficiency and wellness through comprehensive gardening and food related education. *Need-based scholarships are available to anyone interested in attending the class who needs financial assistance. Estimated class time is 2 hours. Afterwards, feel free to shop for seeds and supplies to start your medicinal gardening journey.
