Savannah-based artist Katherine Sandoz’ study of “The Lotus Sutra,” paired with her long-term survey of Coastal Empire floodplains, rivers, and ponds, inspires this most recent series of forty-four works on canvas. Originally written in Sanskrit, “The Lotus Sutra” is a revered final teaching of Buddhist scripture, which suggests that earthbound individuals may reach enlightenment in their lifetime. In the “dharma” (teaching of the nature of reality), the lotus personified is an actor in an unfolding drama and its theater, the universe. Speaking to us in a collage of images, the lotus “language” inspires these two series created over the last two years.

Sandoz positions the lotus as her subject and star, creating a multi-layered expression where sky, water, clouds, and plant life are entangled and often indiscernible from one another. Looking at the series through a material and a temporal lens, Sandoz uses water as both a setting and a tool. Each image consists of water-soaked layers of acrylic paint and fibrous planes which mirrors the composition of the aquatic plant itself. Conceptually, the “unfolding drama” of the lotus above and below the surface suggests the one and the all, the “everythingness” of being. “The Lotus Sutra” teachings and the paintings they inspire hint at what we see and what we don’t see. The watery ways of the resilient lotus, flowering and seeding at once, point to the mystery, depth, and beauty embedded within nature and us.

Professor Patricio DellaGiovanna, Professor and Project Coordinator of the Center for International Studies (CEI) at the Pontifical Catholic University Of Argentina, Buenos Aires will present:

“Argentina Politics and Economy, and the Direct Influence of World Powers in South America”

Argentina, a key global actor, has become a center of attention for foreign investors after the unexpected electoral victory of President Javier Milei. Argentina faces great challenges: rampant inflation, currency depreciation, and a sharp increase in poverty, accompanied by a rise in organized crime related to drug trafficking. But it benefits from support from the U.S., Europe and international financial institutions; it is rich in critical natural resources, a major food producer to the world, and a gateway to Antarctica. China and Russia are competing for influence in Argentina; President Milei talks about a strategic alliance with the U.S. The course of Argentina’s economic reform will affect this competition for influence. Professor Patricio Dellagiovanna, who is visiting Savannah as a member of an Argentinian Rotary delegation, will bring you real time analysis of all this and its significance for U.S. relations with South America more broadly.

This ongoing series pairs authentic Mexican-inspired cuisine with acclaimed tequilas and international tequila experts, offering an interactive learning experience about spirits, food and culture. Every month, top tequila brand ambassadors will be on hand to lead attendees through guided tastings, offering the opportunity to sample special selections that are rarely seen in Savannah.

The 2024 Tequila Pairing Dinner schedule features tequila brands, which will be strategically paired with creative Mexican cuisine designed to complement the featured spirits.

Herradura Tequila Pairing Dinner – Friday, April 26, 2024 We are excited to welcome Herradura

Born in 1870, Casa Herradura is one of Mexico’s most historic and renowned tequila producers, since the 19th century in Amatitán, Jalisco. Within its walls, they craft and estate-bottle some of the finest tequilas anyone has ever tasted. It is here that they invented the first reposado and extra añejo, forever changing the world of tequila. And it is here, from the small town of Amatitàn in the heart of Mexico’s tequila region, that they continue to set the standard for what’s to come.

For over a hundred years, fresh agave juice was collected from the tahona wheel and poured into large fermentation tanks where it was mixed with water from an underground aqueduct. It is then transferred into beautiful copper distillation tanks that serve as a reminder that Casa Herradura has been committed to creating the world’s very best tequilas for over a century, all while using a 100% natural fermentation process.

Things you may not have known about Herradura: it is the only tequila that produces its barrels. Most of Herradura’s flavor, and all of its color, come from the barrel. The new tequila enters the barrel at 88 proof (44% ABV). All bottling is done on-site, and the iconic horseshoe is applied by hand on every bottle.

Event Details

Writer’s block plagues every poet, novelist, and composer- no matter if they’re a novice or seasoned veteran. These writers and composers have surpassed this boundary and have created spectacular works. Unfortunately, this recital is not nearly long enough to encompass all of the literary works out there! Instead, this performance will focus on a sampling of American, English, Scottish, French, and German literature during the 19th century. Literary writers include: Walt Whitman, Robert Louis Stevenson, John Henry Mackay, Heinrich Hart, Thekla Lingen, Paul Heyse, Gustav Mahler, Fiona MacLeod, Richard Wagner, George Crabbe, and Victor Hugo. Richard Strauss, Joseph Marx, Gustav Mahler, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Charles Griffes, and Kurt Weill composed some of these works as arts songs an lieder (German art songs). Richard Wagner and Benjamin Britten have taken their chosen literature and turned them into full operatic works, of which one aria from each will be performed. Lastly, Alan Menken, inspired by Hugo’s beloved novel, wrote the music for Disney’s telling of Hunchback of Notre Dame, which includes Quasimodo’s “Out There.”

Descendants of Ossabaw, and former participants in the Ossabaw Island Project and Genesis, and Sandy West-era university programs are invited to spend a day on Ossabaw Island, Georgia’s third largest barrier island.

Did your parents, grandparents or other ancestors live, work or own land on Ossabaw Island from 1760 – 1980?
Were they tenant farmers, enslaved people, Torrey Family employees, land owners, Freedmen, hunting guides, timbermen, or cattlemen?
Were you an Ossabaw Island Project or Genesis Project participant between 1961 – 1983?
Did you visit Ossabaw as a student on one of Eleanor “Sandy” Torrey West’s university programs?

Please join us as the Ossabaw Island Foundation brings Ossabaw’s people together for a day of food, friendship, history, and remembrance.

Travel one hour by pontoon cruising boat through the Moon River District’s rivers and creeks, across Ossabaw Sound to the island’s North End. The day’s events will include optional tours to learn about Ossabaw’s 5,000 years of human history, and where your people’s roles fit into that timeline.

Optional tours: Ossabaw’s North End, including the Club House, the Boarding House, and the three tabby slave cabins, all restored in the last 20 years.

Middle Place, site of the founding of Hinder Me Not Baptist Church, by the Bond brothers. Also the site of the stables for the Torrey family, and of a sawmill owned and operated by the Torreys, and of Genesis, the semi-self-sustainable community created by Mrs. Eleanor “Sandy” Torrey West.

The Torrey West House, former winter residence of the Torrey Family, and site of the Ossabaw Island Project, an interdisciplinary creative program created by Mrs. West.

Enjoy a box lunch you take with you as you explore Ossabaw Island , then return to the mainland on a late afternoon cruise through the Moon River District.
