Laney Contemporary is pleased to present “Goose,” the gallery’s first solo exhibition with New York-based artist Michael Scoggins whose signature style adopts the youthful alter-ego Michael S. as an autograph for large-scale drawings in the form of a monumental, hand-written notebook page. A note can be both casual and layered with heartbreak and humor. Its disarming ephemerality packs an unexpected punch with shifts in scale that can transform the insignificant into the unforgettable. In a casual note, a clipped phrase or a torn page may carry heavy weight as Scoggins uses the graphite of the pencil to point us toward complex and often shared experiences including the inseparability between joy and grief.

A hand-written note may be scribbled on a piece of scrap paper or carefully composed, but in Scoggins’ work every line, hole, tear, and image is carefully composed with each word or image drawn on the surface loaded with visual and meaningful intention. The works in Goose remind us of the powerful presence and importance of every day. A note is a single slice of thought transferred from one person to another or from one person to the world. Scoggins’ rearticulated large-scale version of the note reminds us that paper is personal. Intimate. Shared.

With a multilayered studio process, “drawings or paintings, sometimes become sculptures,” as Scoggins refers to them interchangeably. Each hole is carefully carved; each line is hand drawn using colored pencil and eraser, going over and over the lines, as if to hand-produce the mass-produced paper. The cuts, folds, tears, bends, and smudges all become a part of the image as each is mounted on the wall, creating three-dimensionality through shadows and the play of light. The gallery’s mirror space culminates with a large-scale installation transforming the 2D into the 3D as paper airplanes fly in multiplication suspended from the ceiling. They merge drawing and sculpture in the act of delivering their messages from person to person, emotion and joy embodied, dispatched, and shared in ways that we might not expect.

The works included in “Goose” often approach challenging, or grief-filled situations and yet they are in contact with how humor and a lightness of being necessitate healthy responses.
This past spring, Michael and Alex’s daughter, Scout, whom they lovingly call Goose, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Attenuated MPS 1. The diagnosis has upended every aspect of their lives. Scout’s current treatment regimen is an Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) which she will undergo weekly for the rest of her life or until advancement in treatments become available. Several of the works in the exhibition are numbered in the upper corner. Each signifies a sequence number for Scout’s treatments, all of which occurred on Tuesdays. The passage of time is made tangible with each number, each drawing, each page, love notes marking a life journey. Art has historically granted a chance to see, hear, or feel another person’s pain or joy, protest or private reflection. It can also share, inform, and advocate. Like a portal, a letter or a sketch, a work of art can grant an opening into someone’s world, strengthening unseen bonds between artist and viewer; the bonds that grant us our humanity.

Jean Macaluso will present a photography exhibition throughout September at The Society of Bluffton Artists Gallery, located in Old Town Bluffton. The exhibit will run Sept. 5-Oct. 1 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Sept.14th at the SOBA Gallery. These events are free and open to the public.

The overall theme of Macaluso’s body of work focuses on the calming properties of water as a symbol of healing and power for cultures around the world. “Aquascapes” taps into the mystical nature of oceans, lakes, rivers, or bays.

“Through these images, I hope to provide you with the opportunity to ponder what water means to you,” Macaluso said. “Whether as a symbol of hope and healing, or one of beauty and change, we can not deny the impact that water had, has, and will have on our lives. Art gifts us a chance to review things that we tend to gloss over as we go about our day. It is my desire that my artwork is that chance to discover your own meaning in what is so often overlooked.”

As a Fine Arts Photographer, Macaluso uses many different cameras, from old or “toy” cameras to digital ones. She uses modern technology to print them digitally. Together, this produces the look and feel that appeals to her aesthetically in black and white.

Working in color, Macaluso captures nature’s essence by presenting visual beauty through a still moment in time providing the viewer with a simple, vivid, and direct experience.

Macaluso graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with a degree in Art and Art History. Her passion for photography includes a special interest in the black and white process, both traditional and digital. Other interests include painting, wheel thrown pottery, hand built pottery, and clay sculpture. Her artwork can be found in the United States, France, and the Netherlands in collegiate, private collections, and doctor’s offices.

Jean recently relocated to the Low Country with her husband and Golden Retriever Mylie.

The Savannah Victorian Society, Savannah State University’s Africana Studies Program, and the Andrew Low House Museum are pleased to host Dr. Tiya Miles, the Michael Garvey Professor of History and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at Harvard University. On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, Dr. Miles will lecture about her book All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, A Black Family Keepsake.

A New York Times bestseller, All That She Carried has won eleven historical and literary prizes, including the 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the 2022 Cundill History Prize. The book was also named A Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, NPR, Publisher’s Weekly, The Atlantic, Time, and more.

In addition to All That She Carried, Miles has authored six other books, including three other prize-winning histories about race and slavery in the American past. Her other scholarly works include: The Dawn of Detroit, Tales from the Haunted South, The House on Diamond Hill, Ties That Bind, and the forthcoming Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped the Women Who Challenged a Nation. Miles also publishes essays in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, and other media outlets, and she has consulted with colleagues at historic sites and museums on representations of slavery, African American material culture, and the Black-Native intersectional past, including, most recently, the Fabric of a Nation quilt exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Miles’s work has been supported by a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her newest book is the debut time-bridge novel, The Cherokee Rose, a ghost story set in the plantation South and based on historical events.

Miles was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“The Africana Studies Program celebrates the opportunity to welcome Dr. Miles back to Savannah State University (SSU),” says Christina L. Davis, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Africana Studies at SSU. “Miles’ collective body of work reminds us of the importance of deeply investigating African American history, bringing to light important accounts of American Black experiences.”

Miles’s presentation is the third program hosted by the Savannah Victorian Society and Savannah State University’s Africana Studies Program, and marks the first year the Andrew Low House Museum has joined the partnership. Our goals include: providing opportunities to learn about history and culture of 19th-century African Americans; bringing together diverse Savannah audiences; and cultivating dialogue and contemplation about our collective and individual pasts.

“The Andrew Low House Museum is proud to join the SVS/ASP in bringing such an important story and a renowned author to Savannah,” said Rebecca Eddins, Executive Director, Andrew Low House Museum. “All That She Carried is a moving account of resilience and courage, and we are thrilled to collaborate on this program.”

Tania Sammons, President of the Savannah Victorian Society, agrees: “I am so pleased the collective efforts of our partner organizations, the City of Savannah’s Weave-A-Dream Program, and our sponsors have allowed us to bring to the Savannah community one of our country’s top historians.” She adds, “All That She Carried is a powerful history that weaves together so many elements of our shared American story and demonstrates the connectedness of people, material culture, and time.”

A Brief History
Tybee Pirate Fest began in 2005 with a small handful of individuals that were looking for a unique event to help boost visitation to the island in the off-season months. The first year was even more successful than the organizers, a non-profit called Tybeefest, even imagined it could be. With the support of many dedicated volunteers, The City of Tybee Island and its elected officials, the Tybee Island Tourism Council, and local businesses the event has grown in popularity each year.

There are lots of activities for families, loads of entertainment and a Thieves Market filled with treasure. The festival grounds have grown to encompass the entire South Beach Parking Lot by the Tybee Pier from Tybrisa Street to 18th Street. This website provides the history of the event and lots of other pirate stuff. Hope you find it useful and it helps you find your way to the Annual Pirate Fest on Tybee Island located only 20 minutes from Savannah GA historic district and the cobblestone River Street.
